Bush Beans

Warm-weather plants and not frost-tolerant. Not treated with a fungicide, so do not plant in very wet or cold soil. Clear plastic helps raise soil temp early in spring. Dewitt Row Cover will keep plants warm at night. As a legume, capacity to fix nitrogen is enhanced by a bacterial inoculant which greatly increases plant vigor. Needs adequate available phosphorus and potassium more than an abundance of nitrogen. The varieties we carry can be harvested continuously, yet tend toward two main flowerings per season. Plant every 2 weeks until first week in July for continuous supply. Susceptible to bacterial blights and molds, so plow under straw early or compost to hasten destruction of disease organisms. ½ lb. per 100'. One packet = 1 oz = 80 - 100 seeds and sows 20'. l lb. = 800 - 1700 seeds. CULTURE: Plant in double rows 1' apart, 3' between each double row. Make furrows about 1" deep. Thin plants to 2"-4" apart when they are 2" to 3" tall. Plant 6" apart in deep-beds. Cover seed with fine soil, and tamp down firmly. SEASON: Warm season. Direct seed 1-8 weeks after frost. MIN.
