Pole Beans

Heavy yielders. Vines grow to 8’ and therefore require special support. More productive per square foot than bush beans. ¼ - ½ lb. per 100 feet, 10 feet per person. One packet = 1 oz = 75 seeds. 1 lb = 800 - 1700 seeds. CULTURE: Set rough poles 1 foot deep and at least 2 feet apart. Try using three poles to make a tepee instead of planting in rows. Remove a shovelful of dirt by each pole, and fill with compost and soil. Plant 5 to 6 seeds 1 inch deep at the base of each pole. Tamp soil down firmly. Later thin to the 3 or 4 best plants per hill. SEASON: Warm season. Direct seed 1-8 weeks after last frost. GERMINATION: 5-8 days. MIN SOIL TEMP: 60° F. SOIL: Light acid to neutral pH 5.5-6.5. COMPANION PLANTS: Corn, summer savory. NOT onions, beets, kohlrabi, sunflowers. PESTS: RUST, BACTERIAL BLIGHT, WHITE MOLD. Avoid tilling when soil is wet, remove or plow under bean straw. Rotate crops. FLEA BEETLE: Control with wood ash, pyrethrum, lime OR beneficial nematodes. CUCUMBER BEETLE: Avoid by mulching.
