Broccoli

A cool-weather crop that does best in Spring and Fall when it's not hot enough to cause bolting. Usually transplanted in Spring and can stand frosts if properly hardened. Transplants that become root-bound or are over 7 weeks tend to form small heads. Fall varieties are generally direct-seeds in mid-Summer for Fall harvest. The shallow root system demands nitrogen and phosphorus rich soil and a constant water source. Lack of water early on may cause miniature heads to develop, called buttoning. A disease prevention of rotation and good sanitation is important. Harvest after heads have formed and before the small buds have opened or when the head spreads with a light touch. To extend harvest, cut near the stalks base on the largest head. It will continue to produce small side shoots for harvest throughout the season. 75-100 plants per 100 ft. One packet = 750 mg = 125 seeds sows 30 feet. 1 oz = 4400 - 9400 seeds. CULTURE: Start transplants 6-8 weeks before last frost; keep temperature 50-70 degrees Fahrenheit for 5-7 weeks. Direct seed 1/4 inch deep, 4 seeds per foot in rows 18-30 inches apart. SEASON: Cool season. Set out plants 2 weeks before last frost through mid June. Direct seed from May-June. MIN. SOIL TEMP: 40 degrees Fahrenheit. GERMINATION: 3-10 days. SOIL: Rich, slightly acid pH 6.0-6.8. COMPANION PLANT: Aromatic herbs, potatoes, celery, beets, onion. NOT strawberries, tomatoes, pole beans. PESTS: BLACK ROT, BACTERIAL BLIGHT; Control through crop rotation, avoid tillage when soil is wet: buy hot water treated seed. FLEA BEETLE: Control with ashes, tillage and pyrethrum. CABBAGE LOOPER: Control with B.t. ROOT FLY/MAGGOT: Use row covers or tarpaper collars to deter flies, use beneficial nematodes OR diotomaceous earth for maggots. MARKET FARM: In nitrogen-rich soil, sow in flats in greenhouse and water daily. Transplant every 10 days for 6-8 weeks. Transplant 5 week old seedlings after hardening off for 4-5 days. When spaced 18" apart, heads may reach 10" diameter. Harvest when buds are firm and tight
