Best planted in mid to late July. Cool weather is ideal, similar to weather in the north after Labor Day. Tolerant of light frosts. One packet = 500 mg, 350 seeds, sows 60 feet. 1 oz. = 6900-11250 seeds. CULTURE: Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, 4 seeds per foot in rows 24-30 inches apart. Thin plants to 18 inches apart. Deep bed spacing 15 inches apart. Optimum soil temperature 75-90 degrees Fahrenheit. SEASON: Direct seed in late June to early July. MIN. SOIL TEMP: 40 degrees Fahrenheit. GERMINATION: 3-7 days. SOIL: Slightly acid pH 6.0-6.8. COMPANION PLANT: Peas. PESTS: BLACK ROT, BACTERIAL BLIGHT: Control through crop rotation, avoid tillage when soil is wet: buy hot water treated seed. FLEA BEETLE: Control with ashes, tillage and pyrethrum. CABBAGE LOOPER: Control with B.t. ROOT FLY/MAGGOT: Use row covers or tarpaper to deter flies, use beneficial nematodes OR diatomaceous earth for maggots.
