Eggplants need heat. Some gardeners grow eggplants all year in a greenhouse; some cover the plants with a cloche at night to hold warmth. 65 plants per 100'. One packet=250 mg. = 50 seeds. 1 oz. = 5500-7200 seeds. CULTURE: Start in flats 8 weeks before transplanting. Sow 2-3" apart and transplant into pots after the first true leaves have appeared. To harden off, cut back on water and allow temp. to drop to 60 degrees Fahrenheit for a week. Keep temp. 65-80 degree Fahrenheit. Plant 20-30" apart in rows 30-32" apart. Deep bed spacing is 18" apart. SEASON: Warm season. Transplant in mid-June or when night temp. stays at least 45 degrees Fahrenheit. MIN. SOIL TEMP: 70 degrees Fahrenheit average. GERMINATION: 5-7 days. SOIL: pH 6.0-6.8. COMPANION PLANT: Beans. PESTS: VERTICILLIUM WILT: Control through crop rotation. COLORADO POTATO BEETLE: Hand pick and destroy egg clusters, use Monterey beetle insect spray.
