Leeks

Tall, non-bulbing type of onion used by cooks for the mild flavor it adds, especially to meat dishes and soups. Leeks benefit greatly from a good mulch to compete with weeks and to blanch the stalks without hilling. Leeks will stand freezing weather when properly hilled or mulched. CULTURE: Transplant 4-6 inches apart in rows 10-12 inches apart. SEASON: Cool season. Transplant out 2 weeks before last frost. MIN. SOIL TEMP: 40 degrees Fahrenheit. SOIL: Rich, slightly acid pH 6.0-6.8. COMPANION PLANT: Celery, carrots, onions. PESTS: SMUT: Control through rotation. THRIPS: Control through clean tillage
