Melons

To raise soil temp, place partially rotted manure with straw 8" under seed or transplants and/or use a plastic mulch or row cover. Cover plants during chilly weather for first month of growth. Remove covers during the day to endure that insects can pollinate the melons. When ripe, the curled tendril nearest the fruit will be dried up. One packet = 1 g. = 30 seeds, sows 10'. CULTURE: Sow indoors 3 seeds per pot about 1/2" deep. Transplant 2' apart in rows 5' apart. Direct seed 3 seed per foot 1/2"-3/4" deep. Thin plants to 2' apart. Maintain adequate fertility, especially nitrogen, and keep temperature 70 degree Fahrenheit or higher. SEASON: Warm season. Plant or transplant after last frost. MIN. SOIL TEMP: 65 degree Fahrenheit. GERMINATION: 5-10 days. SOIL: Slightly acid to neutral pH above 6.0. COMPANION PLANT: Beans, corn, peas, radishes, sunflowers. NOT aromatic herbs, potatoes. PESTS: STRIPED CUCUMBER BEETLE spreads FUSARIUM WILT: Control through heavy mulching and beneficial nematodes. MOSAIC: Thin affected plants, keep area free of perennial weeds.
