Peas

Cool weather crops with heaviest yields during early Summer. Plant in Spring when soil temperature has reached at least 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Plant in well-drained neutral pH soil (add lime, if necessary) with plenty of available potassium. Provide support such as wire or string fences for all but Novella II and Sugar Lace. To extend the season, try planting 2-3 times at 10 day intervals; plant heat-resistant Wando last. A bacterial inoculant will help overall vigor and improve nitrogen-fixing capacity. Crop rotation helps deter root rot. Our seed is not treated with a fungicide, so rotting in unusually cool and wet soils is a possibility. Plastic mulch can help to stabilize soil moisture (prevents over-soaking by rain) and raise soil temp. (caution: max. soil temp. 85 degrees Fahrenheit). Soaking seed overnight in warm water before planting speeds germination. One packet = 1 oz. = 200 seeds, sows 16'. 1 lb. = 1500-2700 seeds. CULTURE: Sow 12 seeds per foot, 1-1 1/2" deep in rows 10-12" apart. For double row planting, plant 3" between rows. 18-30" between each double row. Use different spacing for leafless, freestanding varieties. SEASON: Cool season. Plant 4-6 weeks before last frost. MIN. SOIL TEMP: 40 degrees Fahrenheit. SOIL: slightly acid pH 6.0-6.8. COMPANION PLANT: Most vegetables and herbs. NOT onions, garlic, gladiolas, potatoes. PESTS: BACTERIAL BLIGHT: Buy western grown seed, avoid injuring plant. FUSARIUM WILT: Buy resistant varieties. ROOT ROT: Rotate crops and keep soil well drained. APHIDS: Release beneficial insects, use soap sprays.
