Rutabaga

Can be planted from late June to early July and are best harvested after a couple of hard frosts. A sweet, root-cellaring vegetable, great in stew. One packet = 1 g. = 300 seeds; sows 50 feet. 1 oz. = 1900-3600 seeds. CULTURE: Sow 1/2 inch deep, 2 seeds per inch in rows 12 inches apart. Thin to 6-8 inches apart. Deep bed spacing, 3 inches. SEASON: Cool season. Plant 90 days before first fall frost for storage. MIN. SOIL TEMP: 40 degrees Fahrenheit. GERMINATION: 3-14 days. SOIL: Slightly acid pH 6.0-6.8. COMPANION PLANT: Peas. PESTS: FLEA BEETLES: Control with wood ashes, agricultural lime, rotenone OR beneficial nematodes. ROOT MAGGOTS: Wood ashes and fabric row covers prevent parent fly from landing. Try beneficial nematodes for IPM, but NOT with wood ashes, lime or diatomacous earth.
