Squash

SUMMER SQUASH- Not frost tolerant. Nitrogen-rich, loamy soil and partially rotted manure and compost aid in growth. Compost heats soil providing for good germination. When transplanting starts, take care not to disturb the roots as this will stunt growth. All summer squashes are best harvested young. 50 plants per 100'. One packet = 4 g. = 20-80 seeds. 1 lb. = 2500-4200 seeds. Seed size varies between varieties. CULTURE: Sow directly 1" deep, 3-4 seeds per foot in rows 4-5' apart (3 feet apart for summer bush varieties). Thin to 18" apart in rows. If planting in hills, sow 5-6 seeds per hill and later thin to 3 plants. Hills should be 3-4' apart. SEASON: Warm season. Plant after last frost. MIN. SOIL TEMP: 60 degrees Fahrenheit. GERMINATION: 4-7 days. SOIL: Slightly acid pH 6.0-6.8. COMPANION PLANT: Nasturtiums and corn. PESTS: SQUASH BUG: Plant nasturtiums or radishes nearby. VINEBORER: Clean tillage. BACTERIAL WILT: Remove affected plants, and control CUCUMBER BEETLE with heavy mulch and beneficial nematodes. MOSAIC: Control aphids and perennial weeds. WINTER SQUASH- Cucurbita pepo squashes (Delicata, Table King Acorn, and Spaghetti F-1) do not need to be cured. Store well in dry, cool conditions, 55-60 degree Fahrenheit (in the pantry or under the bed). One packet = 4 g.
