Tomatoes

Originally a tropical plant. Only patient, dedicated effort by plant breeders over many years has made growing them in northern climates "fruitful". Should be started indoors. Maturity dates are from transplanting. Tomatoes like a similar, but richer soil than peppers. Phosphorous is important. Go easy on nitrogen or you will have all leaf and few fruits. Should not be set out uncovered until nighttime temperatures reach at least 45 degrees Fahrenheit. As with peppers, row covers and plastic mulches help with warmth early in the year. Select stocky vigorous starts and plant them deep, burying a portion of the stem. 50 plants per 100'. One packet = approximately 30 seeds. 1 oz. = 6875-12,500 seeds. CULTURE: Plant in flats and thin to 2" apart after first two true leaves have appeared. Maintain temperatures between 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit for 5-7 weeks. Try to maintain even growth, transplant to larger containers if plants get too large. Transplant 18-24" apart in rows 30-36" apart. Staked or caged tomatoes can be spaced 10-16" apart in both directions. Maturity date is from transplanting. SEASON: Warm. Transplant the first week in June, when soil is warmed. SOIL: Slightly acid pH 6.0-6.8. MIN. SOIL TEMP: 75 degrees Fahrenheit. GERMINATION: 5-14 days. COMPANION PLANT: Chives, onions, parsley, asparagus, marigold, carrot, nasturtium. NOT kohlrabi, potato, fennel, cabbage. PESTS: BLOSSOM END ROT: Provide adequate calcium, keep watered during hot, dry periods that follow extended moist periods. MOSAIC: Avoid tobacco products when handling transplants. TOMATO HORNWORM: Use B.t. var. kustaki. COLORADO POTATO BEETLE: Use Monterey Beetle Spray
