Description

For generations this variety has been the pride of Washington State's onion producing region.

Walla Walla Onion is a renowned, open-pollinated sweet onion prized for its exceptionally mild flavor and juicy, tender texture. This long-day variety produces large, globe-shaped bulbs with pale golden skin and crisp, white flesh that is low in pungency and perfect for fresh use.

Ideal for slicing, salads, sandwiches, and grilling, Walla Walla is best enjoyed fresh, where its natural sweetness truly shines. A favorite in home gardens and markets alike, it is especially well-suited to northern growing regions.

  • Type: Open-pollinated annual (long-day onion)
  • Start indoors: 8–10 weeks before last frost or direct sow early spring
  • Sun: Full sun
  • Spacing: 4–6 inches
  • Bulb size: Large
  • Days to harvest: 100–120 days

Onions prefer loose, fertile, well-drained soil and consistent moisture during bulb development. Plant early for best results. Because of its high sugar content, Walla Walla does not store as long as pungent varieties and is best used fresh or shortly after harvest.
