Description

Tom Thumb Shell Pea is a compact, early-producing heirloom variety ideal for small gardens, containers, and patio growing. This dwarf plant reaches just 8–12 inches tall, making it perfect for growing in pots or tight spaces without the need for extensive trellising.

Despite its small size, Tom Thumb produces a generous harvest of plump, tender pods filled with sweet, classic shelling peas. Its mild flavor and soft texture make it excellent for fresh eating, cooking, and freezing.

  • Type: Heirloom, open-pollinated annual
  • Direct sow: Early spring as soon as soil can be worked
  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade
  • Spacing: 2–3 inches
  • Height: 8–12 inches (dwarf, minimal support needed)
  • Days to harvest: 50–60 days

Peas thrive in cool weather and well-drained, fertile soil. Sow seeds directly and keep soil evenly moist for best germination. Although compact, plants may benefit from light support in windy areas. Harvest pods when they are full and bright green for the best flavor and tenderness. Frequent picking will encourage continued production.
