Description

Siletz Tomato is an improved Oregon Spring-type slicing tomato bred by Dr. James Baggett, known for its early production, reliability, and excellent performance in cool climates. It produces smooth, deep red fruits that are considerably larger than average for early tomatoes, often reaching up to 10 oz. The flavor is rich and well-balanced, making it ideal for fresh slicing, sandwiches, and early summer harvests.

This variety is especially valued for its ability to set fruit in cold weather, often producing the earliest true red slicing tomatoes in trials. Plants are large, vigorous, and well-leafed, providing good fruit protection and consistent yields. Many of the first fruits may even be seedless, adding to its appeal for early-season use. Siletz is highly recommended for dependable production in short-season gardens.

  • Type: Annual tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)
  • Growth habit: Determinate
  • Start indoors: 6–8 weeks before last frost
  • Transplant: After all danger of frost has passed
  • Sun: Full sun
  • Spacing: 18–24 inches
  • Days to maturity: 52–65 days
  • Disease resistance: Verticillium Wilt (V) resistance

Tomatoes grow best in warm, fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture and strong sunlight. Determinate varieties like Siletz produce most of their crop in a concentrated harvest window, making them especially useful for early production and smaller garden spaces. Light staking or cages help support heavy fruit loads, and regular harvesting encourages efficient ripening and strong yields.
