Purple Passion is a distinctive asparagus variety known for its striking deep purple spears, sweet flavor, and tender texture. It has become a favorite among home gardeners and specialty market growers for its attractive color, large spear size, and exceptional eating quality. The spears are typically more tender and less fibrous than many traditional green asparagus varieties, with a naturally mild, sweet flavor that makes them especially enjoyable fresh or lightly cooked.
This variety produces vigorous plants with high-quality spears that are especially well suited for fresh eating and gourmet cooking. Purple Passion is noted for its early to mid-season production and attractive appearance both in the garden and on the plate. While the purple coloration fades somewhat when cooked, the spears retain their excellent flavor and tenderness.
Purple Passion asparagus is especially prized for raw preparations, roasting, grilling, and light steaming. The sweet flavor develops from higher sugar content than many traditional green asparagus varieties, making it one of the finest choices for fresh harvest eating.
Growing Instructions: Plant asparagus crowns in early spring in a permanent garden bed with full sun and well-drained soil. Dig trenches 6–8 inches deep and space crowns approximately 12–18 inches apart. Spread the roots over a small mound of soil in the trench and cover with 2–3 inches of soil initially, gradually filling the trench as the plants grow. Keep the bed weed-free and water regularly during establishment. Avoid harvesting the first year after planting to allow strong root development. Light harvesting may begin the second year, with full harvests typically beginning in the third season.
