Purple Majesty is a striking sweet potato variety known for its deep purple skin and vibrant purple flesh. It is prized both for its ornamental appeal in the garden and its rich, mildly sweet flavor. The roots are smooth and uniform, and the intense purple color comes from naturally occurring anthocyanins, the same beneficial pigments found in blueberries and other deeply colored fruits and vegetables.
This variety produces medium to large tubers with excellent culinary versatility. The flesh holds its color well after cooking, making it especially popular for baking, roasting, mashing, and adding visual impact to dishes. The texture is smooth and slightly drier than orange-fleshed types, with a rich, earthy sweetness.
Purple Majesty performs best in warm soil and long growing seasons, producing well once temperatures are consistently warm. Like all sweet potatoes, it thrives in heat and is very sensitive to cold, making it ideal for late spring planting after frost danger has passed.
Growing Instructions: Sweet potato slips should be planted outdoors only after all danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures are consistently warm (ideally 65°F or higher). Space plants approximately 12–18 inches apart in loose, well-drained soil or raised beds. Set slips deep enough to cover the roots and lower stem, then water thoroughly. Maintain even moisture during establishment, but avoid waterlogged soil. Sweet potatoes perform best in full sun with warm temperatures and light fertilization, which encourages strong root (tuber) development rather than excessive vine growth.
If slips arrive before outdoor planting conditions are suitable, they may be temporarily potted indoors in containers with good drainage. Keep them in a warm, bright location and water lightly to maintain even moisture until they can be safely transplanted outdoors.
