Description
Douglas Fir Bark Dust is a traditional and effective treatment used when preparing cut seed potatoes for planting. Applying the bark dust to freshly cut seed pieces helps protect the exposed surfaces while they heal and form a protective callus. Proper healing of the cut surface is important because it reduces moisture loss, limits shrinkage, and helps prevent the seed pieces from curling or rotting before planting.
The naturally slightly acidic properties of Douglas fir bark create an environment less favorable to many fungal pathogens, allowing the bark dust to act as a mild natural fungicide. In addition, the natural resins and waxes found in Douglas fir bark help reduce excess moisture buildup on the cut surfaces, further lowering the risk of decay during the healing process.
To use Douglas Fir Bark Dust, first cut seed potatoes into appropriately sized seed pieces, making sure each piece contains at least two to three healthy eyes. Immediately after cutting, lightly coat the freshly exposed surfaces with the bark dust. After treatment, store the seed pieces in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area for a minimum of 24 hours to allow the cuts to heal and callus properly. Treated seed potatoes may be safely held for up to one week before planting.
