Crimson Cherry is a productive rhubarb variety prized for its vibrant red stalks, tart flavor, and excellent baking qualities. This cool-season perennial grows into large, vigorous plants reaching approximately 2–3 feet tall and can remain productive for many years when properly maintained. Its attractive deep red stems and dependable harvests make it a favorite for home gardens and traditional culinary use.
Rhubarb is especially valued for its bold tart flavor, which becomes rich and balanced when sweetened in pies, crisps, sauces, jams, and baked desserts. Crimson Cherry produces tender stalks with excellent color and strong flavor throughout the harvest season. Established plants are vigorous and long-lived, returning each spring with increased production over time.
This variety performs best in cooler climates with rich, fertile soil and regular moisture. Once established, rhubarb requires minimal maintenance and provides reliable annual harvests for many years.
Growing Instructions: Plant rhubarb in early spring in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. Space plants approximately 3–4 feet apart to allow room for mature growth. Set roots with the buds just below the soil surface and water thoroughly after planting. Keep plants consistently watered during dry periods and apply mulch to help retain moisture. Avoid harvesting stalks during the first year to allow strong root establishment. Full harvests may begin in the second or third year. Remove flower stalks as they appear to encourage continued production.
